Most of the time, cats and dogs don’t get along under one roof. Although there are cases where they manage to give each other space, they usually end up fighting, hence the saying, “fighting like cats and dogs.” However, a sweet husky named Lilo and a kitten named Rosie are living proof that, despite their differences, dogs and cats can be friends.
Rosie was only about two weeks old when her adoptive parents—sisters who often rescue cats and help them find forever homes—found her. She was frail, lethargic, and hardly responded to them. She wouldn’t even drink her milk.
They decided to let the little kitten cuddle with their Siberian husky, Lilo, through the night. They knew Lilo had motherly instincts even though she has never had puppies of her own. They thought maybe letting Rosie sleep beside Lilo would help improve her condition.
And they were right. The naturally motherly Lilo took Rosie in. She even went far beyond their expectations as she shifted to “full surrogate mode,” licking the little kitten to clean her up, letting her suckle, and helping her expel waste. Lilo just kept licking baby Rosie and wouldn’t stop mothering her until she responded.
Pretty soon, Rosie began to warm up to Lilo. She would cuddle next to the husky or sometimes climb on her back and play with her. The affectionate Siberian husky helped lift the spirit of Rosie, who responded to the love that she was showing to her. Their closeness was captured on the now viral video that has been watched more than 6 million times on YouTube.
Rosie’s then foster parents were supposed to help her find a new home after she became stronger, but because she and Lilo became inseparable, they decided to adopt her instead. Now Rosie is part of the family, along with Lilo and two other huskies. Her life has been changed forever by her unlikely surrogate mother, Lilo the husky.
